I've just amended the issue date for this collection. I've had it as 1927 since getting my first Murrays catalogue some decades ago, but here's what fellow collector Roger Pashby has to say:
Sorry to keep pestering you, but your site is SO brilliant I feel the need to let you know when there is something not quite correct.
This first series of Footballers isn’t 1927 as you state; it’s more likely late 1922 or early 1923.
How do I know?
The early numbers which feature Town players make reference to them having played in the 1921-22 FAC Final vs Preston North End, but the clincher is card 148, the title for which is ‘Cup Holders Beaten’ and the text says it was a busy afternoon for Taylor in the grim tussle at Hyde Road. Town lost 3-1 at Manchester City on September 23rd 1922, so it’s clearly that game.
Now, whether the card set was produced before the end of the year or not is another matter …
