Dodge the Gaffer!
Kick! Xtra magazine
31 cut-outs

A sort of card game, found in the centre pages of issue no. 108. The two pages need to be pasted to card and then the cards are cut out, so that they can be used in the game. There are 15 footballers, with each one included twice and then there's the 'gaffer' card - Mikel Arteta. This must have been compiled by a gooner, as Gunnersaurus is also included.

58+ cards

(13:02:2013 23:04):  These cards are very rare. The card shown here was recently for sale on eBay with a starting price of £95. I was hoping to try and date the card by checking when Burnley played in these colours, but when I checked the Historical Football Kits website it was nowhere to be seen.
Here's a list of known cards, it features rugby clubs as well as football clubs. If you know of any others please get in touch.
UPDATE (03-12-2017 13:11):  Wigan Boro' added to the list, thanks to Mark Hughesdon. The cards are unnumbered and are numbered here for reference purposes only.
UPDATE (04-12-2017 16:49):  Following further research the date of issue has been amended to 1923-24.
UPDATE (11-10-2026 17:00):  I decided to turn this post into a project to compile an illustrated checklist. 25 of the 58 known cards displayed so far.

Famous Cricketers and Cricket Grounds
Hudson & Kearns, Photographers / News of the World / Editor C.W. Alcock

This full-page illustration comes from a weekly publication called Famous Cricketers and Cricket Grounds, which ran for 18 issues. The published then issued a complete bound volume, as shown above. As well as highly respectable cricket career he also player football for the Old Carthusians, who were formidable opponents in the early years of the F.A. Cup, winning it in 1881. In a previous post, which can be seen here - C. Aubrey Smith, I have detailed the clubs results in the 1984-85 tournament in which he took part.
He also played for the club over the next couple of seasons. These are the results in the F.A. Cup for 1885-86 and 1886-87. He played on the left-wing when they were narrowly defeated by Preston North End in the quarter-final on 2 March, 1887.

Here is the text that accompanies the illustration, which briefly mentions his football exploits:
Known as "Round the Corner Smith," by reason of the peculiarity of the run he takes in the act of delivering the ball, C.A. SMITH has had a varied experience, as he has played cricket in Australia and South Africa as well as in England, Charterhouse, Cambridge University, and Sussex were the three stages of his English cricket. With Major Warton's Team in Africa, as well as with Shrewsbury's combination in Australia, his record as an all-round Cricketer was of the best. A fast round-arm bowler with a high delivery, and one not easy to watch, he was generally successful, and on wickets that helped the ball at all, particularly so. with a considerable advantage in height, he had also a neat style as a bat, and as he played the ball hard, and never lacking pluck, he was generally safe for runs, hitting freely all round the wicket. He was one of the best forwards at Association Football for some years. On the Stage he is also making a name for himself.
