I was brought into an e-mail conversation yesterday between Geoff Sherley and Syd from The Clyde Archive...
I checked your site, as I had an old Clyde card from I believe early 1920s. However I see this card i.e. Harry Rae. I believe my card is an original and would appear to be on thin paper cut out probably from a comic. Do you have any detail of the origin of this card. (I have 35 other cards from the same set.)
My singular sphere of interest and knowledge is the history of Clyde FC, so I am unfortunately unable to help in this instance as to the origins of this particular card set. I have, however, copied Alan Jenkins into this email, on the basis that he may already have details of the set or indeed may be interested to hear of your collection. Alan runs the excellent website below, so may be able to provide some information (Alan, hope you don't mind me taking this liberty).
Not at all. Here's the full checklist, along with the Harry Rae 'card' sent by Geoff:

  1. Hi Alan, this is one of my favourite sets of DC Thomson freebies but I'm wondering if you or anyone can throw some light on the H Wilkinson shown on sheet 2?

It looks to be a picture of Harry Wilkinson, who made 4 appearances for Stockport in 1928, because it's a very similar picture to the one used in the JF Sporting Collectibles '1920/30s Association Footballers' set.

However, this Harry Wilkinson signed for Oldham in 1923 but hadn't played a League game before then - he signed from a non-League club. Southport joined the Third Division North in 1921/22, so even if he had been on their books, it would seem strange for him to have been included in this set with no significant playing record.

There was a George Wilkinson playing for Southport in 1922, but the only picture I've found of him doesn't look like this one!

Can any Southport fans / historians out there that can shed some light on this?
