Football cards and stickers issued around the world, from the 1880's to the present day and even some that haven't been issued yet. I don't have any cards for sale, nor do I provide valuations, this blog is just a means of passing on information I have gathered over many decades of collecting. Alan Jenkins.

32 cards
These cards are usually referred to as being issued in 1954 and I've gone with that date here.
Jesse Pye left Wolverhampton Wanderers for Luton Town prior to the start of the 1952-53; Raich Carter left Hull City at the start of the 1951-52 season and was at Cork Athletic around 1953, prior to moving to Leeds United as Manager; Tommy Lawton mover from Notts County to Brentford in the latter half of the 1951-52 season.
Charlie Mitten was a Manchester United player in the summer of 1950 when he moved to Independiente Santa Fe in Bogotá, Colombia. He then joined Fulham in December 1951, where he stayed until February 1956.
I think it's fair to say that the Daily Herald version was issued around early 1951.
I've included the Sportfoto versions, which make a total of three different sets and all three come with at least two different printings.
I've added the team names as they appear on the cards, though there are a few with a '?' against them in the Daily Hearld/Sportfoto list. The Sportfoto version is the rarest so I have only identified a small number of the team names on these cards.
I'll be glad to hear from anyone who may have some thoughts or more information relating to these cards.
UPDATE: The Sportfoto version may have been issued sometime in the 1953-54 season. Graham Bruton has sent in a scan of the Johnny Carey card that has him listed as 'Manager Blackburn Rov.' a role he accepted in August 1953, a couple of months after retiring from the game.
UPDATE: Roger Pashby has sent in scans of four Vic Metcalfe cards from his collection. The one on the right illustrates the second version of the Daily Herald cards - name and number in normal style, not bold. I hadn't shown this one in the images I posted yesterday.
UPDATE (14-02-2018 20:32): I have tried to simplified the information in this checklist. There are now two main lists, the first one covers the Daily Herald Copyright, Daily Herald Copyright / SPORTFOTO and SPORTFOTO cards as they all have the same checklist, though there are plenty of differences between some of the cards. The second checklist is for the Sportfoto cards where there are quite a number of different players included compared to the other set.

Hello, I wanted to comment on the Daily Herald Version of the set.
ReplyDeleteUnder the error/variations 10 Liddel with a "No." before the number. This is actually part of an earlier only 12 (or possibly 15 card) first series set that was issued sometime in 1950. The Daily Herald decided to drop the "No." on all future Daily Herald and Sportfoto series. The first series set is also characterized by regular (unbolded) font.
I have cards 1 (Mercer) to 12 (Charles) with a "No." in front of the number with the exception of card 9 Denis Compton (who incidentally played his last football game in spring 1950). In addition, the Trevor Ford card from this first series lists him with Aston Villa who he left for Sunderland in October 1950 which conclusively dates the set earlier than the other versions. The Second series printed in 1951 updated this change and shows him with Sunderland.
I believe the Second series (characterized by Bold name and number) was an expansion of the first series and issued the following year in early 1951 but sometime after card 16 Neil Franklin joined Hull in February 1951. I have yet to see a "No." version of the card above John Charles; however, it is possible that cards 13-15 also had a No. as Vic Metcalf (card 15) is written in regular unbolded font.
Hopefully another collector can provide some information around Denis Compton and whether cards 13-15 with a "No." in front of the number exist?
That's very interesting, I'd love to be able to create proper checklists for the different versions but I don't know enough about these cards. Thanks for your input.
DeleteHi Alan, hope al is well. Just a question/clarification - the "Sportfoto" release, without Daily Herald anywhere, were still issued by the Daily Herald? Or are they unconnected? If the latter, do you know how they were issued? Thanks Paul
ReplyDeleteHi Paul,
DeleteI don't think any of them were issued by the Daily Herald, even though that's what they have been referred to as. They were issued by Sporting Publicity, a Leeds firm, according to the albums.

It's similar to some Collectors Club postcards from the 1960's being listed as Daily Mirror issues just because they include the phrase 'Copyright Daily Mirror'
Cheers,
Alan
In the Sportfoto series Wilf Mannion's club is spelt Middlesborough
ReplyDeleteThank you.
