Matt Stevens has kindly sent in photos of this set of anonymous photographic cards, issued by Arthur Adams, Chesterfield. They were originally listed by the Cartophilic Society as a 'Trade' item, but as you can see from the advert in a contemporary Chesterfield F.C. programme the photos were available with cigarettes - Adams' "Sports" Virginia. They are unnumbered, and there are two different types of card:
Black and white, name below photo, followed by 'Chesterfield F. C.'
Sepia, name within photo, followed by 'Chesterfield F. C.'
The Cartophilic Society handbooks list a total of 52 cards, so some of Matt's cards listed here are unrecorded and are duly noted as such. I've added League appearances for all the players listed and noted those that failed to play any League games while at the club. It helps to support Matt's thoughts that the 28 cards he has were issued in 1923-24, but it's obvious that Arthur Adams issued cards over a number of seasons

I've been sent scans of this very rare football card issued in the United States in 1888, this is the small version - 2¾" x 1½". One of the good things about early North American card sets, is that they usually printed the checklist on the back of the cards. The cards are listed in alphabetical order rather than in the order they appear on the cards.

This set is the last of the Sports cigarettes package issues to include footballers. There are also a couple of other series of Sportsmen which don't include any footballers, and other series on Cricketers and Radio Stars. This set can be collected in two ways: as individual cards trimmed to the back of the slide with 'Sports' printed at the top and 'Godfrey Phillips Ltd' at the bottom, or as complete slides but I don't have an example of a complete slide to show you. I'd like to thank Carl at www.rarecards.co.uk for allowing me to use some illustrations from his website, which is an amazing source of rare football cards.
