Prince of Wales' Boy Scouts Fund - George Robey Stamps

1921

George Robey Stamps
Prince of Wales' Boy Scouts Fund
12 'stamps'

In philatelic circles these are known as cinderella stamps - stamps that can't be used in the postal system. There's a lot of cross-over between the stamps and card collecting. I don't know how these George Robey stamps were issued, but probably not with any product.

George Robey was a Music Hall entertainer, but also had a colourful sporting sideline. He played cricket and was a member of the M.C.C. In 1903 he joined Millwall and scored plenty of goals for them. He played in one football match for Hull City against Nottingham Forest in the 1904-05 season and later organised a team to take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in a charity fixture. The first stamp shown above seems to show Robey wearing a football jersey.
