V.C.C. - Sportsmen and Other Notabilities (5)

1922
VAA-030 Sportsmen and Other Notabilities
V.C.C., 71 Roman Road, London, E3
72 cards

I've been thinking about these V.C.C. cards again. I had a niggling thought that there was another list of anonymous cards that have been likened to Bunsen and Barratt cards from the mid-1920s.

As I said previously, the Barratt cards and the Anonymous cards are from different issuers, even though they use the same photos. Just for completeness, I'll repeat what I said previously: It seems that the Anonymous cards are V.C.C. cards without any reference to the company on the back.

I am wondering if the V.C.C. cards are similar to the Webcosa Football Bingo wrappers from the late 1950s, where you had to collect the different teams as listed on the wrappers. The trouble was, most wrappers didn't have the team name printed on them!!! I wonder if it's the same with the V.C.C. cards - the only cards you could use for exchanging for presents were those that were numbered and had V.C.C. printed on the back. As the cards said, "No other cards accpeted unless printed with the name of V.C.C." This seems to imply that there may be cards without V.C.C. printed on them.
I've got a list of 26 of the Anonymous cards and all the known V.C.C. cards appear in this list. The only little blip is the 26 cards, when the VCC numbers of the footballers only seem to run from 1 to 25 - 26 in the V.C.C. checklist is a cricketer. As you can see from the illustrations above, all the Barratt cards had the team name printed in capital letters.
I've now found the other list, to be found in the Trade Index under ZJF-040. These are listed in the book as 'Famous Figures Series. As those issued by Bunsen, but unnumbered and untitled.' I've added further illustrations of real Bunsen cards from the Famous Figures Series. In my opinion, these cards have no real similarity to the Anonymous cards that I believe are part of the V.C.C. collection. I've included all the illustrations I've gathered over many years of these Anonymous cards.
Another point I'd like to make is that V.C.C. cards can be found with the backs overprinted with a Poppletons rubber stamp. The only other time I've seen this rubber stamp used is on the backs of the Anonymous cards that are similar to the V.C.C. cards.
I'd be pleased to hear from any collectors who have similar cards in their collections. It would also be good to hear from collectors regarding my theory about these Anonymous cards.

  1. Is there any significance to the fact that certain Barratt cards from the similar series have a reference to Hills & Lacy Printers based in E4 ? With VCC and Bunsen being East London issuers

    1. I suppose it's possible. VCC and Bunsen were E3 put a fair distance apart from what I can tell. I haven't yet checked the map to see where in London E4 the printers were based.
