UPDATE (09-08-2025 17:00):  Andy J. and Andrew R. have provided a list of some of the portrait and were even able to date a few and from that information I've compiled this list of first-team fixtures over the period. They discovered that the first one was issued on Boxing Day in 1919 with the one for the Manchester United game a few weeks later actually being given a number. There are still lots of gaps and I've included friendly games just in case portraits were issued with those programmes too.

These inserts were given away with the Northampton Town Official Programme during the 1938-39 season. I've had an e-mail from Peter Stevenson:
Re your entries for Northampton Town F.C. and the section about the 1938/39 programme inserts. I don't have any more of these, although I fancy a fair number were issued that season, possibly with every home programme. I was drawn by the similarity of your images to some photos within a couple of books in my collection. Have a look at the first three scanned attachments.
The first two are from Northampton Town Football Club (Images of Sport book series), compiled by David Walden and John Watson. The third is from The Cobblers by Frank Grande. 
All of the players appear to have adopted the requisite pose with the same backdrop but the images have clearly been cropped out of their original promotional borders. All of these players were with Northampton that season, although I am not so old as to remember them!
Thanks to Peter I've been able to add another four players to the list of programme inserts. Northampton Town played 21 home games during the 1938-39 season.

Port Vale reached the semi-final of the F.A. Cup in 1953-54 and for the 5th Round cup tie against Blackpool they included two team photos as an insert to the match programme. The photos were printed on one sheet that was stapled into the middle of the programme but the other side of the sheet is blank. Thanks to bisphamseasider for the scan and the information...
The photographic insert was likely to be the only one that season because the club notes say "To celebrate the occasion we introduce a souvenir programme which we hope with its hard paper photographs of the two teams will be worth preserving". 
The programme is a 16 page issue with the extra 4 pages showing the teams and blank on the reverse. 
There were no other home cup ties after this victory which would warrant another insert.

Not long after starting this blog I included information about 2 cards that were given with the Blackpool programme in 1935-36. Trevor Cotterell then added another name.
John D. Cross has very kindly sent scans of the nine cards he has in his collection. He has also sent photocopies of the Jimmy Hampson, along with a photocopy of the Blackpool official programme for the game against Bradford (Park Avenue) on 8 February, 1936 which includes information about these cards. John doesn't know how many cards were produced.
John is looking for card numbers 1, 6 and 10 along with any numbers after no. 12. Can anyone help him?

Pete at Pete’s Picture Palace has sent in scans of the first four cards included with this season Crystal Palace matchday programme. The club are celebrating their 90th year at Selhurst Park. The cards are on a perforated concertina back page so you can remove the sheet with 4 cards on from the back page. The would probably devalue the programme though.
A "limited edition" album (£4.99) to keep them in will be on sale at the next home game. It doesn't say how many cards there are in so many words, but it does say there will be 4 in every programme and as there are 19 home league programmes that's 76 cards.
