Brownies Cartoons
Salmon & Gluckstein / "Brownies" Cigarettes
26 cards
Salmon & Gluckstein took advantage of the popularity of Palmer Cox's Brownies books and comic strips by producing "Brownies" Cigarettes. Cox was a Canadian author, poet and illustrator and the first appearance of a Brownies character was in 1879 while the first of 17 books was published in 1887. The title of the cards is sometimes listed as 'Occupations' but this seems to be incorrect and probably arose when only a few cards were known.
I've included illustrations of some cards, but is there a football one in the series? I have also included a cigar box label showing Palmer Cox and some of his Brownies characters.
