Salmon & Gluckstein - "The Great White City"

1908
"The Great White City" Shepherd's Bush, London
Salmon & Gluckstein
50 cards (2 football-related)

The White City Stadium was built for the 1908 Olympic Games and hosted all six football matches as well as other sports such as archery, athletics, gymnastics, rugby union and swimming. The athletics track was huge, requiring just three laps for the mile, allowing a 100 metre long swimming and diving pool to be dug into the infield. Queens Park Rangers used the stadium as their home ground from 1931 to 1933, and again for the 1962-63 season. Probably one of the last football matches of any significance to be played there was the Uruguay v France fixture during the 1966 World Cup tournament, the owners of Wembley Stadium refused to cancel the greyhound racing scheduled for the same date.
