J.L. Prescott & Co. (USA) - (Z12) Enameline College Colors Paper Dolls

1890's
(Z12) Enameline College Colors Paper Dolls

9 paper dolls

Not usually referred to as cards, Jefferson Burdick created a 'Z' category in his magnum opus, The American Card Catalog, which was originally called The United States Card Collectors Catalog before being re-named in 1946.
When I saw the one regarded as basketball, I noticed the ball looked more like a football. Basketball was invented in December 1891, by James Naismith and the sport was originally played using footballs. But laces used to close off the hole needed for inserting the inflatable bladder would cause bounce passes and dribbling to be unpredictable. Eventually a lace-free ball was created but the ball shown here is a football, so who's to say the little boy is a footballer rather than a basketball player. The paper dolls vary slightly in size but this one is 5⅝" tall and 2½" wide.
