John Wilberforce "Jocko" Anderson first came to prominence as a footballer. He won the Connaught Cup with Winnipeg Scottish FC in 1915, beating Toronto Lancashire 6-1, after the first game ended 0-0. The competition was created in 1912 to find the champions of Canada. In 1916 he won the Allan Cup, awarded annually to the senior ice hockey champions of Canada, playing for Winnipeg 61st Battalion, where he is listed as Sgt. Jocko Anderson. He later played for Calgary Tigers and Victoria Cougars, winning the Stanley Cup in 1925 with the latter. He also played football for the Calgary Caledonian F.C.
