Jocko Anderson

1 postcard
About 18 months ago I included a postcard of the Winnipeg Scottish Football Club (Winnipeg Scottish F.C. (Canada) - Winnipeg Scottish Football Club - Champions of Canada 1915). I have been contacted by Aubrey Ferguson of the Society for International Hockey Research. He provided a photo of Jocko Anderson, full name John Wilberforce Anderson, who played for Winnipeg Scottish when they became champions of Canada in 1915 and is featured in the original team photo. He also won the Manitoba Cup in 1914 beating Brandon in the final and were runners-up the following year, losing to Winnipeg United Weston. It is surmized that he's wearing a Winnipeg Scottish sweater in the above photo.
Jocko Anderson made a new for himself in ice hockey, winning the Stanley Cup in 1924-25 season while playing for Victoria Cougars, the last time a non-NHL team won the trophy. The team also won the Western Canada Hockey League that season. He originally played for Selkirk Juniors, Winnipeg St John's and Winninpeg 61st Battalion while on military service, with whom he won the Allan Cup in 1916. After the First World War he played for Selkirk Fishermen, then Calgary Tigers, who won the Big 4 League in 1920-21, before being traded for cash to Victoria Cougars in November 1922. After winning the Stanley Cup in 1925 the Cougars reached the final again in 1926, but Jocko Anderson suffered a career-ending broken leg in the first game of the Stanley Cup Finals series. He coached a number of teams over the next few years, including Nelson (West Kootenay Hockey League), Victoria Capitals and Victoria Cubs.
