A struggling team at the bottom of the Serie A travel to play Milan knowing that a defeat will see them relegated. Due to an injury to the club's regular goalkeeper, the inexperienced, young Marini deputizes and saves a penalty to confirm victory and salvation from relegation. A number of footballers appear in the film, including Carlo Annovazzi, Lorenzo Buffon, Lajos Czeizler, Gunnar Gren, Nils Liedholm, Vittorio Pozzo, Gunnar Nordahl and Omero Tognon. The star of the film is Raf Vallone who was a professional footballer before retiring and turning to acting. He joined Torino in 1934 and won the Coppa Italia with them in 1935-36. He joined Novara for the 1939-40 season and retired in 1941 at the age of 25. You might recognise him as Cardinal Lamberto in The Godfather Part III.
