Johnny Reder (Boston Red Sox, Fall River F.C.)
Kodak
USA
1 postcard
This is the only card of any description I could find featuring Johnny Reder, who played 17 games for the Boston Red Sox between April and June, 1935. The postcard seems to be a modern production. He later played for Hazleton Mountaineers, Reading Red Sox, and Williamsport Grays in the New York–Penn League, where in 1935 he was voted Most Valuable Player in the league. He ended his baseball career with the Syracuse Chiefs of the International League at the age of 28.
Before turning to baseball Reder was a goalkeeper for a couple of Fall River amateur teams, including Champion Niagara and Walsh Chevrolet. Walsh Chevrolet reached the quarter finals of the National Challenge Cup (now known as the U.S.Open Cup) in 1929. He signed for Fall River F.C. in 1929 and stayed for three years, during which time the team changed names twice, first becoming the New York Yankees, and then the New Bedford Whalers. During his three years as a professional footballer he won three American Soccer League titles and the National Challenge Cup twice (1930 and 1931).
This real photo postcard measures 3½" x 5½" and features Johnny Reder in his Boston Red Sox uniform in 1932. The original photo was taken by George Burke, but this card was produced some time later, but no earlier than the 1950's, judging by the standard Kodak back.
