J. Baines
20,000+ cards
J. Baines was not the first to sell football and cricket cards in the North of England in the late 1880's but he was the most prolific and the business survived into the 1920's. I've always been interested in the various issuers and the businesses that took advantage of craze of collecting football and cricket cards. I thought I would delve into my database and shows some of these interesting cards from a bygone age.
The front of the card seems to be a J. Baines design, but I've had these images for a very long time, in a time before scanners, when photocopiers provided black & white images only. Because of this the team name is illegible.
UPDATE (09-12-2023 07:20): Gary Curtis has provided more information about this card. It was issued by J. Baines and features William (Bill) Mother Elliott of the Maoris NZ Natives touring team from 1888-89.
UPDATE (30-11-2024 08:48): The original photocopies have been replaced with scans of a different card and this too was produced by J. Baines. John Boswell played 15 times for Scotland between 1889 and 1894.

ReplyDeleteAnd yes it is a Baines issue, named on the front very hard to see even on the genuine article.
ReplyDeleteHi Gary,
DeleteThanks for your two comments, a colour scan would be brilliant, thank you.
