Leônidas da Silva is probably the most famous pre-war Brazilian footballer and at the time of the 1938 World Cup tournament he was playing for Flamengo. Despite only finishing in third place in France (for some reason Leonidas was left out of the semi-final) he returned home to Brazil a hero. The cigarette manufacturer Sudan launched the Leonidas brand to take advantage of all the publicity. A set of cards was produced and these were given away in the packets of cigarettes.
The first advert shown here was published in the São Paulo newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo, in July/August 1938 and the second advert was published on 25 May, 1942, after Leonidas joined São Paulo. The two goal diagrams were also taken from newspapers in 1938.
Ray has provided photos from his collection but this list of cards is incomplete. The cards feature individual portraits of the Brazilian team - these can be found numbered and unnumbered, scenes from the 1938 World Cup tournament in France and the visit of Leonidas to the cigarette manufacturers Fabrica Sudan.
