So, there seems to be a consensus that this set is from 2002. There is at least one more later set that was released. It includes some of the same players but also some different. The images used for the duplicated players appear to be the same, but some of the trivia questions for each are different.
ReplyDeleteI cannot verify the release date for this one, but one source says 2011 (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/107922/football-trivia)
All I can tell for certain about the date is that it includes questions about events in the 2006 World Cup so I would guess 2007 or later.
It came in an actual tin, not a cardboard box, that includes the same product code (PLG5910) and UPC (5012822059109). There is a copyright date on the tin (MMII B.S. Randle) which matches the date of the set listed in this blog along with the game designer, although the instruction sheet included has a copyright of 2003.
Here is a list of the cards included in the unknown release (* notes new player):
John Barnes
David Beckham
Dennis Bergkamp (example of trivia changes: on the original, Q4 is about the 98/99 FA Cup. On the later card, Q4 is about Inter Milan)

Hi Paul,
DeleteThanks for your comment, I'm sorry it's taken me a while to authorize it but it stirred me into trying to do some more research, but I'm probably more confused than I was before. The information you've provided is very helpful.
I'll try and get my thoughts straight and leave another reply tomorrow.
Cheers,
Alan
I should have also mentioned that my information comes from opening a factory-sealed tin last week that I got off eBay.
DeleteI really thought I was getting the one you listed, as I want the Bergkamp and Vinnie Jones, but was very confused upon sorting through my set.
At least I got a Bergkamp (albeit with a different back) and there are more Arsenal stars in the one I got. But dangit! I want the Vinnie Jones!
Hi John,
DeleteThanks for the list, I will add this checklist to my blog some time over the weekend. I've found scans of some of the new cards and the two versions of the Dennis Bergkamp card. I was going to add an image of the tin but whilst doing some searching it seems there are at least 3 different tins. It would be good to add the tin to save other collectors having the same problem as you.
Talking of 'tins', I'm sure mine was a cardboard box not an actual tin, but it was a long time ago. I used to travel by train on business some times and used to take boxes like this to compile lists to pass away the time. I wish I'd hung on to the Vinnie Jones card for you.
I might buy one or two of those other versions of Football Trivia if you can describe the image on the lid of the tin, so I can find the one you bought.
Cheers,
Alan
I have what looks like a cardboard box version on the way currently. Found one on eBay and so I will update you on what set is inside when I get it.
DeleteIf you'd like, I can take pictures of the tin set I already have and send them to you to use for the blog.
Good luck with the box, I hope it includes Vinnie Jones. If it does I can add an image of that box with the original checklist.
DeleteA photo of the tin you've got would be great, thank you.
Cheers
Alan

If you haven't had a chance, I sent you pics and info that compare the cardboard box version and the metal tin version.
DeleteThanks John, I've seen your e-mail. It's just been crazy here the last few days, I'll get back to you in a day or two.
DeleteCheers,
Alan
