C. Aubrey Smith

C. Aubrey Smith

A slight detour this time. Not football cards, but cards of a famous gentleman who also achieved a little bit of success as a footballer. Some of you may recognise the British actor shown on the two cards above. The coloured card was issued by Nestlé and is the large version.
He played in the F.A. Cup Semi-Final in 1885 for Old Carthusians (formed some years earlier by former pupils of Charterhouse School).
UPDATE (18-01:2025 16:34): Press cuttings related to the 1885 F.A. Cup Semi-Final added. Here are details of their cup run:

This is a little of what wikipedia has to say about him...
Sir Charles Aubrey Smith CBE (21 July 1863 – 20 December 1948), known to film-goers as C. Aubrey Smith, was an England Test cricketer who became a stage and film actor, acquiring a niche as the officer-and-gentleman type, notably in The Prisoner of Zenda. In Hollywood, he organised English actors into a cricket team, playing formal matches that much intrigued local spectators.
Smith was born in London, England, and educated at Charterhouse School and St John's College, Cambridge. He settled in South Africa to prospect for gold in 1888-89. While there he developed pneumonia and was wrongly pronounced dead by doctors. He married Isabella Wood in 1896.
Smith has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
In 1933, he was on the first board of the Screen Actors Guild.
He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1938 and was knighted by King George VI in 1944 for services to Anglo-American amity.

36 cards

The only football card in this collection is no. 12 - it's good to see Wales' main sport being depicted as 'football' rather than rugby. It's a bit of a fallacy that rugby is usually depicted as the national sport of Wales. I know most of the country goes rugby-mad around the time of the six nations tournament, fuelled by the media in Wales (newspapers and TV) but more people watch and play football every weekend in Wales than watch and play rugby. Some lists include card no. 7 as 'soccer' but that card actually depicts a rugby scene.

Cypal International Ltd. - Cypal Football Series

1977-78
CYP-1 Cypal Football Series
Cypal International Ltd.
22 ?

I've had an e-mail from Keith Hulls...
To my knowledge you have not previously featured any cards from the Cypal Football Series. According to the Trade Index there are only 2 known (CYP-1), and the 2 that occasionally seem to turn up are both Liverpool cards - Tommy Smith and Ian Callaghan. However, I also have 2 other Liverpool cards, plus 10 Manchester United from the series, as follows:

1.  Ray Clemence (Liverpool)

2.  Tommy Smith (Liverpool)
3.
4.  Joey Jones (Liverpool)
5.
6.
7.  Ian Callaghan (Liverpool)
8.
9.
10.
11.
12.  Alex Stepney (Manchester United)
13.  Chris Nicholl (Manchester United)
14.  Martin Buchan (Manchester United)
15.  Brian Greenhoff (Manchester United)
16.  Alex Forsyth (Manchester United)
17.  Lou Macari (Manchester United)
18.  Sammy McIlroy (Manchester United)
19.  Jimmy Greenhoff (Manchester United)
20.  Gordon Hill (Manchester United)   -   added 26-07-2020  -  thank to Nikji99
21.  Stuart Pearson (Manchester United)
22.  Steve Coppell (Manchester United)

There is no indication how many are in the set, but the numbering sequence suggests that nos 1-11 are a complete Liverpool line-up, and nos 12-22 are a complete Manchester United line-up. If this information is of interest to you, and worth adding to your blog, I would be keen to know if any other collectors may be able to fill in the missing gaps.

50 cards (6 footballers)

The U.K. version is the one where the title is printed in one line on the back of the card and was issued with State Express 333 cigarettes, with the other version being issued in New Zealand. I'd like to say a big 'thank you' to Roger Pashby, as his Huddersfield Town website was the only place I could find good illustrations of cards from this set.
UPDATE (21-08-2022 12:48):  Glyn Roberts has kindly provided a complete list of all the cards in this collection to supplement my original list of footballers.

An alphabetical compendium of information, the slips were punched with two holes for inserting into special binders. I don't have illustrations of the football slips so I've included a couple of others as examples.
UPDATE (22-05-2015):  I've now found one of the football slips. The slips measure approximately 3.8" by 2.4 ".
