First‑time World Cup players this summer will wear a Debut Patch, eventually creating a new category of event‑used memorabilia.
The patch programme ties into FIFA’s long‑term licensing shift: Topps/Fanatics will replace Panini as FIFA’s trading‑card and sticker partner from 2031, with debut patches converted into Topps cards. The final World Cup patch design is still pending, but the system mirrors the MLS Debut Patch programme introduced in 2024. Teams receive a supply of patches, one is applied to a player’s shirt for their first appearance, then it's removed post‑match and will eventually be mounted onto a unique trading card. In the MLS, these cards are player‑signed and inserted randomly into Topps Chrome MLS hobby boxes, but FIFA has not confirmed whether World Cup debut cards will also be autographed. Because the Fanatics agreement begins in 2031, Debut Patch cards from the 2026 and 2030 World Cups will not reach the market until after that date. Combined, those tournaments could generate 600+ debut cards, forming one of the largest single‑event memorabilia runs in modern football collecting.
High‑profile debutants in 2026 include Erling Haaland and Lamine Yamal. Some teams are making their debuts at a World Cup tournament and many teams are returning after long absences, such as Algeria, Austria, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Czech Republic, Ivory Coast, Norway, Paraguay, Scotland and Turkey. The vast majority of players from these countries will be making their first appearance at a World Cup tournament.
For collectors, the Debut Patch cards represent a new tier of event‑used, player‑specific, first‑appearance memorabilia - a category likely to become highly collectable when they eventually see the light of day.
