I was reading about Garfield Sobers the other day and when I checked his Wikipedia page it stated that he demonstrated skill and ability at a number of ball sports, including cricket, football and basketball.
Wikipedia goes on to say:
Sobers was a natural athlete and played football at a competitive level in Barbados, primarily as a left-back (defender). His physical strength, tactical awareness, and athleticism made him a formidable player.[citation needed]
His most notable football achievement came when he was selected to play for Barbados in an international match against Martinique in the 1950s. In this match, Sobers helped his team to a 2–0 victory, scoring one of the goals — a rare feat for a defender.[citation needed]
I've found it impossible to verify these reports, but I thought I'd include the story here as I just came across this amazing Garfield Sobers autograph card that will appear in Futera's FC Cricket Series 1, which is due out soon. The on-card inscription references the 6 sixes he hit in an incredible over when playing for the West Indies against Glamorgan on 31 August, 1968. The last of his 6 sixes went out of the St. Helens ground and was seen bouncing down a nearby street.
