Cards 43 and 44 from this collection depict football scenes, the second of these certainly features American football but the first card seems to include a mix of rugby and football. The ball is round which would indicate football and the goal seems to use nets. The only problem is the player nearest the ball seems to be trying to pick it up! It would be interesting to read the description on the reverse but I have been unable to track down a scan so far.
Finally tracked down the text on card number 43:
The mother of all football games - Soccer is too, the only game which is truly named. It is the only one where the feet alone are used to propel the ball. About 1823 a student at Rugby was playing in a school game. Furious at not being able to kick the bouncing ball, he suddenly picked it up and ran with it to the opposing goal. This caused a great deal of excitement amongst the spectators, and a lot of argument later as to whether carrying the ball would speed up play. Finally some Cambridge students began to play a game in which the ball could be carried - the beginning of the modern Rugby Football.
