St. Petersburg Cigarettes Co. Ltd. - Company Information

St. Petersburg Cigarettes Co. Ltd. - Company Information

Yesterday, via the comments, I was asked if I knew anything about the St. Petersburg Cigarette Company who were based in Portsmouth and issued football cards some time around 1900. I must admit I knew nothing about this company but my wife Paula likes a challenge and this is what she has come up with so far. Three images of 88 High Street, Portsmouth are shown, where the company was founded by Mark Weiner. The drawing is from 1842 - 87 and 88 High Street is the building on the right. The impressive building to the left was a Post Office. The two photos are from 1910 and 1933. This part of the High Street was completely destroyed by enemy bombers during World War II. The fourth image is again from 1842 and shows 117 High Street which was a tobacconist shop at the time the cards were issued.
There are also two cuttings from the local Hampshire Telegraph newspaper and a timeline.

  1. Hi - do you have any photos of the old Froddington Road factory? My father took it over after WW2 as G HalL & Co Blindmakers after our St James's Road factory was bombed out. Andrew Cooper

    1. Hi Andrew,

What little I've been able to discover is included here. I haven't got anything on the Froddington Road factory.
