I have been sent a scan of this Cabinet Card. Tobias Kipling was a photographer in Darlington in the 1880's and 1890's but transferred his business to Middlesbrough around 1900. Darlington FC played in hooped jerseys in the period before and after World War One, but what their kit looked like in the 1890's isn't yet known - http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Darlington/Darlington.htm. I have included an image of a Darlington FC team photo (with the Cleveland Challenge Cup and Arthur Wharton sitting to the left of it), sometimes dated 1887, though Wharton was playing for Preston North End in the 1886-87, when they reached the semi-final of the F.A. Cup. Wharton was the goalkeeper in this photo, but another of the players seems to be wearing a very similar hooped jersey to the one shown in the cabinet card. It's possible the man in the photo is a Darlington player, maybe a goalkeeper - does anyone recognise him?
