Football Postcards - Supplement to Football Telegraph
Football Telegraph (Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph)
2 known
Football Telegraph was published in Kettering and ran from 1 January 1898 to 25 April 1914 and seems to have re-launched in 1921 before ceasing publication altogether in 1939. It was the sports edition of Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph. I only know of two postcards, I'm not sure if they are mentioned in the newspapers. The British Newspaper Library has a complete run from this period but as it is now based in Leeds it's unlikely I'll be going there to do further research.
26.03.04. William M'Auley - The Popular Captain of Aberdeen FC
09.04.04. J.T. Robertson (Rangers), R. Templeton (Newcastle United), T. Niblo (Aston Villa), R. Walker (Heart of Midlothian)
The player on the card is William McAulay rather than M'Auley. Strange selection of players for a Midlands newspaper. J.T. Robertson was Chelsea's first Player/Manager two seasons later and scored their first ever official goal. Anybody got the card :)
ReplyDeleteHi Nik,
DeleteYes, they used to replace the 'c' with an apostrophe for some reason. Used to have a photo of the second card but some of the CD's that I used to store pictures on are now unreadable. So much good stuff that I just can't get at - very frustrating. I was wondering whether the four players were Scottish international team-mates, possibly from a game v England.
