Barratt & Co. - (BAR-740) Test Cricketers by E.W. Swanton (1956) / (BAR-745) Test Cricketers - Series B (1957)

(BAR-740) Test Cricketers by E.W. Swanton - Series A (1956)
(BAR-745) Test Cricketers - Series B (1957)
Barratt & Co.
35 & 48 cards

As I was sorting through the 1950s Barratt cards I came across two cards of Denis Compton (numbers 2 and 23). He and his brother Leslie both played for Arsenal in the 1940s and 50s. Denis was also an accomplished cricketer, having played in many test matches for England. I thought I'd include these two cards for completeness. The fronts of both cards are the same. Test Cricketers by E.W. Swanton is known as 'Series A' and was issued in 1956. The other collection, cunningly identified as 'Series B' was issued the following year.
UPDATE (12-03-2024 13:05):  John Levitt has provided scans of the Trevor Bailey cards. The first one mentions him winning an F.A. Amateur Cup winners medal with Walthamstow Avenue in 1952. The second version doesn't mention is football success.
UPDATE (12-03-2024 20:51):  Doug Insole was a well-known amateur footballer and won his 'blue' at Cambridge United where he was in the same team as Trevor Bailey. He only appears in the 'B' series and the card mentions him captaining the Corinthian-Causlas team when they appeared in the 1956 F.A. Amateur Cup final at Wembley Stadium, drawing 1-1 with Bishop Auckland before losing the replay 1-4 at Middlesbrough's Ayresome Park.

    1. Hi John,

Thank you for letting me know about Trevor Bailey. I never realised he also had some success as a footballer.

I've added complete checklists for the two cricket sets.

      Cheers,
      Alan
