The legendary midfielder Obdulio Varela is the star of this advertisement card for the Uruguayan beer Doble Uruguayo. Varela, the captain of La Celeste during the 1950 World Cup, played his domestic soccer for Deportivo Juventud, Montevideo Wanderers, and Peñarol, winning six Uruguayan First Division titles while playing in the black-and-yellow striped shirt of Peñarol. This card measures 5¼" x 7½" and shows an image of Varela pouring a beer into a glass. Printed on the advertisement is “A Brindar Con Doble Uruguaya Muchachos…!” (To Provide Double Uruguayan Boys) and “Y los invito a escuchar por RADIO SPORT desde este BAR los partidos del Mundial!!!” (And I invite you to listen to RADIO SPORT from this BAR the matches of the World). Additionally, Varela’s facsimile signature is printed on the sky-blue and white advertisement.
