D.C. Thomson / Adventure / The Rover / The Hotspur / The Wizard - Famous Footballers (01)

1951
Famous Footballers
D.C. Thomson / Adventure / The Rover / The Hotspur / The Wizard
179 (Black)
50 (Blue)

D.C. Thomson published one 'Famous Footballer' in each of their four story-papers on 25th August 1951. Then, for each of the subsequent 10 weeks, Adventure, The Rover, The Hotspur and The Wizard included 12 'Famous Footballers' with each issue, up to and including the issues on 3rd November, 1951. So, if you bought all four comics for the eleven week period you'd end up with 484 'Famous Footballers', but only 216 would be different. Some are available up to five times throughout the print run, while other appear just once. 179 are available printed in black and of the 121 printed in The Wizard, 37 of them appeared on the back page, which meant they were printed in blue. The blue ones are listed separately. Most are found now individually cut out and sometimes attached to card, which helps make them look more collectable.
UPDATE (18-11-2024 21:35):  Dave Horn has provided details of the 12 Famous Footballers printed in blue on the back page of The Wizard dated 15 October, 1951.

Further to a previous post, I've now gone through all the base set of cards and the Pure Soccer/This is Soccer subset, listing all the cards that show more than one player. I've missed out a couple where the second player is almost completely obscured behind the feautred player. With card no.1 I managed to find the original photo that the card was produced from. Only a small part of the player is shown on the card, too little to make an identification.

Cardiff City collectors might like to know that Robert Earnshaw, who appears on a number of cards throughout the 2013 collection, also features on two other cards, as the second player.

1.  Thierry Henry (New York Red Bulls) - John Stertzer (Real Salt Lake)
6.  Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City) - Robert Earnshaw (Toronto FC)
