Longacre Press ~ Eagle / Swift - Soccer Stars

1963

LON-700 / LOD-3 Soccer Stars
Longacre Press  / Swift - Eagle and Swift
16 cards

The first part of the collection was given away with the very last issue of Swift on 2 March, 1963. The comic merged with Eagle and the last three cards were given away with the first three issues of the re-launched Eagle/Swift comic.

A plastic wallet was included included with the 9 March issue. It shows Ray Pointer (Burnley) on the front and Chelsea's Peter Bonetti and Johnny Gordon of Birmingham City on the back. I pinched the scans of the Ray Wilson card from Roger Pashby's website, Huddersfield Town Cards & Stickers.

48 cut-outs

These are cut from the comic, not cards. Here are the first four, the next eight might follow on from the first four, but they are on facing pages. The
images were printed in pairs from 12 October, 1956 to 29 March, 1957 - with the booklet having originally been advertised in the issue dated 14 September, 1956 (volume 7, issue 37). The featured men are unnumbered and not named, so collector's had to decide who they were before sticking them in the album.

48 cards

These are listed in the Cartophilic Society's Trade Card Index but I don't think I've ever seen any of these cards. I presume they would have included one or two footballers. Can anyone help?
UPDATE (08-10-2024 18:27):  This cutting comes from the issue dated 25 September, 1956, with information about how to acquire the album.

Longacre Press / Eagle - Eagle Gallery of Famous Sportsmen

100?

Another collection of 'cut-out and keep' items, this time from the Eagle comic. These cover many sports, with no. 91 the highest number known, so there are probably at least a hundred in the whole set. I don't have any illustrations of the proper footballers, so I've included Allan Watkins, an England Test cricketer, who also played football for Plymouth Argyle and Cardiff City.

27.  Ronnie Moore (Speedway)
28.  Alec Bedser (Cricket)
29.  Jack Young (Speedway)
30.  D.G. Phadkar (Cricket)
33.  G.S. Ramchand (Cricket)
34.  Jim Laker (Cricket)
35.  Tom Graveney (Cricket)
36.  Fred Trueman (Cricket)
37.  Allan Watkins (Cricket)
81.  Tommy Taylor (Manchester United)
84.  Redfearn Froggatt (Sheffield Wednesday)
89.  Jimmy Hagan (Sheffield United)
90.  Wally Ardron (Nottingham Forest)
91.  Tommy Lawton (Arsenal)
