Unknown Issuers - Italian cards (2)

Manfred De Maker has been in touch about this item....

Last week I stumbled on a very interesting site about Italian soccer cards. It was in Italian so I couldn't read it, but it was nice to it. When I saw on your blog questions about some Italian cards I wrote the owner of the site for some help. And I just got his mail. You can find below the information.
Regards,
Manfred

From: UB

Dear Manfred, here it is the complete answer to your questions.

1a and 1b. I confirm the production NANNINA, 100 cards printed in 1957-58 and 1958-59. The two cards were identical in both the series.

2a. As I expected, it is not a Nannina card, but again Tuttocalcio CICOGNA. A series of 100 cards but from 1957-58 (I repeat, this was the first year John Charles played in Italy, with Juventus).

2b. I said that is was surely CICOGNA  but I have made a mistake. This is a card from STELLA (the third Italian producer at that time of this kind of cards), a series of 40 cards from 1959-60 (my friend is the most competent in this subject!). There exist even in a version in white and red.

3a. I confirm the production Tuttocalcio CICOGNA, 100 cards, but this Hitchens card belongs to the series 1963-64 (the second year Gerry Hitchens played with Torino), and NOT 1962-63. I did confuse the question of the smaller character and bigger character for the name of the player: big for 1959-60, 1961-62 and 1962-63, small for 1960-61 and 1963-64 (the cards were identical under any other characteristic).

3b. Correspondingly, I confirm the production Tuttocalcio CICOGNA, 100 cards, but printed in 1961-62 (when John Charles was indeed a Juventus player).

Not really a collectable card set, but as all the trading cards in the UK these days are game-based cards, then I think these picture cards are similar. If you collect Manchester United cards or those of some of their players, like David Beckham or Ryan Giggs, then I'm sure they'd be of interest. Thomson's Weekly News - Great Football Players

1913-14
Great Football Players
Thomson's Weekly News
9 sheets - 65 players

Trevor Cotterell sent in the above photo...  it is of a sheet of footballers marked 'Thomson's Weekly News'. I have seven sheets with 8 footballers on and a single sheet with 9 players making 65 in total. I would guess these are 1910/20 period.
I think these can be quite accurately dated to some time in the 1913-14 season. H.T.W. Hardinge joined Woolwich Arsenal at the beginning of that season and the following summer the club dropped the Woolwich part from their name. I have details of one of the other sheets, which I've listed below. They are numbered for reference only, it doesn't indicate the order in which they were issued.

Sheet 1

W. Wedlock (Bristol City)
D. Shea (Blackburn Rovers)
J. Pennington (West Bromwich Albion)
E. Fletcher (Manchester City)
D. Taylor (Burnley)
G. Holley (Sunderland)
J. Coleman (Fulham)
J. Kitchen (Sheffield United)

Sheet 2

W. Watson (Burnley)
A. Turnbull (Manchester United)
J.S. Maconnachie (Everton)
F. Walden (Tottenham Hotspur)
E. Holdsworth (Preston North End)
H.T.W. Hardinge (Woolwich Arsenal)
R. Crompton (Blackburn Rovers)
G.W. Elliot (Middlesbro')

Mark Avenell has been in touch again...

I have had these plain backed stickers for a few years. I do not know much about them, except that they are very similar to FKS items. I hope someone looking at your site could help.

They do look very much like the photos in the FKS album that was produced in the U.K. at the time of the 1966 World Cup. These same images were used all around the world - Sicker in West Germany, Disgra in Spain, Agência Portuguesa de Revistas in Portugal, etc.

The Spanish version was also available in at least some countries in South America. Below you will find the Spanish Disgra version along with the Peruvian Disgra album and you'll see that the stickers in the Peruvian album are numbered like the ones you have. I hope this helps.

SportKings LP - SportKings Series A

2007
Sportkings - Series A
Sportkings LP
USA
Approx. 800 cards

In late 1933 and early 1934, Goudey issued the legendary 48-card Sport Kings, a set that featured the first-ever football cards of Red Grange, Jim Thorpe and Notre Dame immortal Knute Rockne. The set was the who's who of American sport. Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth and Carl Hubbell represented baseball, Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen and Gene Sarazen represented golf, Bill Tilden represented tennis, Gene Tunney, Jack Dempsey and Max Baer represented boxing, Eddie Shore, Ace Bailey and Howie Morenz represented hockey, Joe Lopchick, Nate Holman and Eddie Burke presented basketball while speed skating, ski jumping, billiards, horse racing, wrestling, athletics, boating and aviation were all captured by the stars of their day.

In 2007 SportKings LP resurrected the brand name by issuing a series of cards similar to the original 1930s cards, but with this new series, there was also so much more - on card autographs, memorabilia and ultra rare 1 of 1 cards. Series F is due out in a week or two and will include cards of Cristiano Ronaldo. In the meantime, I thought I would checklist all the football (sorry, soccer) cards issued in the five series of SportKings that have been issued to date.

3 known

These pennants were given away with the 1968-69 Yellow backed Footballer cards issued by A&BC. In the 1960's and 1970's A&BC issued different collections for the English and Scottish markets. The English version of the pennants is made up of 26 different clubs. Only 3 Scottish clubs are known to exist, but do not include teams like Celtic, Rangers and Aberdeen. If you know of any other Scottish pennants please get in touch.

Dunfermline Athletic
Morton
St. Johnstone

I found it impossible to find a scan of one of these pennants anywhere, except for this St. Johnstone one on Nigel Mercer's superb site: Nigel's Webspace - Galleries of English Football Cards 1965/66 - 1979/80. If you've never seen it, check it out. You won't be disappointed.

I have no others above this, nor do I have any un-numbered.
The only thing I do not like about this series is the variety in size of the sportsman, anything from 135mm x 55mm down to 55mm x 30mm.
Hope this helps, until next time, regards, Trevor

Both the ones I listed last time as unnumbered might have been documented as such because the number had been cut off. So I think it's safe to assume that this is probably a collection of 40 sports personalities.
