Unknown number
These coloured portraits were printed on paper and individual items you see these days have been cut from sheets, with each measuring approximately 55 x 73mm. 17 known so far, but I think there must be at least one more, which would make two sheets of 9 players.
UPDATE (12-12-2025 07:05): Thanks to a comment from John Dalton, I looked into this collection and found it was not what I thought it was. I was originally told they were issued with the Scottish Sunday Mail but this is not correct, the sheets were actually issued with the Glasgow Weekly Mail. I have three posts about them, including a complete checklist of all the players on all 11 sheets, plus the dates on which they were issued. Here are the links:
J. Barbour (Dundee)
D. Colman (Aberdeen)
Alex Craig (Greenock Morton)
J. Croal (Falkirk)
F. Gibson (Raith Rovers)
A.H. Goodwin (Ayr United)
Andrew Greig (Aberdeen)
W. Hogg (Falkirk)
J. McLaughlan (Ayr United)
J. McNaught (Falkirk)
E. Magner (St Mirren)
J. Meaney (Falkirk)
H. Raith (Raith Rovers)
Willis Rippon (Hamilton Academicals)
J. Robertson (Falkirk)
J. Soye (Aberdeen)
W. Whittle (Kilmarnock)
?

I have J. McLaughlan but also TS Rennie and F McStey, all of Ayr United. The cards must have been printed double sided as on the back of these cards are also G. Ormonde (Rangers); H. McKenzie (Queen's Park) and a Geo Wilson who is wearing what looks like the black and gold stripped Aberdeen shirt.
ReplyDeleteI also have AH Goodwin but that is a copy of the card on paper
Hi John,
DeleteIt's really fortunate that you left a comment against this collection. It's more than a dozen years since I posted this information about the Scottish Sunday Mail collection. Newer information proves these photos were given away with the Glasgow Weekly Mail.
Take care,
Alan
