Daily Mail World Cup Wall Chart

28 players on one sheet given free with the Daily Mail, though there was only room for 22 players on the Wall Chart. I have to own up to pinching the two photos of the stickers from Steve Marsh's superb website of West Ham United memorabilia - theyflysohigh.

Daily Mail - F.A. Cup Team Picture Gallery (1946-47)

1946-47

F.A. Cup Team Picture Gallery
Daily Mail
11 per team

It is unclear which newspaper printed these. I've gone for the Daily Mail, but they could come from another, such as the Daily Graphic. The pictures were laid out to form a team formation, from goalkeeper to outside left. About the size of a postage stamp as they are often found cut down to individual players. Covers some of the teams in Division One and Division Two and there are probably more to be found.

All the Brentford ones can be seen here - brentfordfcmemorabilia
UPDATE (19-03-2021 05:56):  Gerard Scully has provided scans of some of these line-ups that he discovered in an old scrapbook - Stoke City, Wolves, Sheffield W., and Notts Forest with some of them being numbered. A couple of them include a proper heading so I've amended the title for this series as well as adding a list for Notts Forest.
UPDATE (20-03-2021 09:41):  Three more teams added - Birmingham City, Cardiff City and Luton Town, thanks to Gerard Scully. 15 teams listed so far.

Daily Mail - Sportraits (different)

1946
Sportraits (newspaper cut-outs)
Daily Mail
Unknown number issued

Roger Pashby has been in touch again:

Hi again Alan,
I notice that you have just uploaded a different type of Sportraits which features a photographic head and cartoon body. Well, here are two that I have featuring Huddersfield Town players Peter Doherty and Bob Hesford in yet another style! This time we have the photographic head, a brief bio and then a cartoon.
I wonder just how many different series there were of these?

Check out Roger's superb collection of Huddersfield Town cards and stickers at Huddersfield Town Cards & Stickers, you won't be disappointed.

Daily Mail - Sportraits (Photographic)

1946

Sportraits (newspaper cut-outs)
Daily Mail
21 cut outs

Another variation on the Sportraits newspaper cut-outs. I presume these also come from the Daily Mail. These are numbered and although the body is drawn the head is a photograph, a short biography is followed by a facsimile autograph. No. 21 is the highest number I've seen. I don't know if it is significant or just a coincidence that the only ones I know of so far come from the two Manchester clubs.

Daily Mail - Sportraits - numbered (cut-outs)

1946
Sportraits - numbered (cut outs)
Daily Mail
109

I’ve had another e-mail from Roger Pashby. He sent in the two pictures above showing the two versions of the Willie Watson item.

More Sportraits!
Two more in my collection.
Unsure of dates, but I have these as about 1939-1945/6.
No 20 Willie Watson (error) and the correction.

I have had this checklist for as long as I’ve had the previous Daily Dispatch checklist. This one includes a couple of issue dates. You’ll also see that some make up a sub-set of double photos featuring players from the 1946 F.A. Cup Final.
UPDATE (21-09-2016 16:51):  I've had an e-mail from Roger Pashby and he has successfully identified the player whose photo was used incorrectly on the original number 20. It's Edwin Watson.

Daily Dispatch - Football Stars (3 series)

Football Stars - 3 Series
Daily Dispatch
66 (1st series), 64 (2nd series) and 59 (3rd series)

I have extensive lists of football cards and stickers but I must admit that there are much more knowledgeable collectors out there than I. I recently added the above post to this blog and now I've heard from Huddersfield Town collector Roger Pashby:

Hi Alan
I just wandered across your blog by following a link from Nigel Mercer's wonderful website. I have some of these newspaper items on the 1946 section of my website at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/roger.pashby/
Strangely, my SPORTRAITS items feature photographs of the player, together with a small cartoon at the bottom; the caricatures that you feature here are in the FOOTBALL STARS series.
Feel free to 'lift' any images that you like!
Roger

That's great to know. I'll be updating the original post with a link to this new one. I've got checklists for the 3 different series of Football Stars that were issued in the Daily Dispatch. I've had these lists for many years and I am ashamed to say I've forgotten who sent them to me. I would really like to give him a namecheck here.

Daily Mail - Sportraits

1947
Sportraits (newspaper cut outs) - Hand drawn
Daily Mail

? cut-outs

Another collection of newspaper cut-outs issued just after the Second World War. There were many different series, but they were all distinctive. This collection being unnumbered, two different Sportraits are shown above. It has always been my intention to go to the Newspaper Library at Colindale (it's now moved from there) to look for these in the actual newspapers. Do you know of any others?
