Venorlandus - World of Sport - Our Heroes - Plain Back

1977
Our Heroes - Plain Back
Venorlandus
49? cards (8? football)

These cards are similar to the Our Heroes World of Sports Flik-Cards issued in 1978, but these cards have plain backs and square corners, though the typeface is the same. They may have been created as proof cards and not only feature a range of sports stars but also includes pop stars like Elvis Presley and Rod Stewart, as well as future Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. It should also be noted that some sporting personalities didn't make it into the Our Heroes Flik-Cards collection, these are indicated thus ***. Some of the cards are being offered for sale on eBay and each card is being listed as being one of a limited edition of just 6 cards. This is highly unlikely though the number of copies of each card is going to be low, it's unlikely to be 6.
The artist is Tim Holder (1939-1995), he was art director and assistant editor of the Daily Express, and his cartoons were occasionally published in the newspaper. In 1977 he created four prints of Leading Conservative politicians - Margaret Thatcher, Edward Heath, Harold Macmillan (Earl of Stockton) and Alec Douglas-Home, in a similar style to these Our Heroes cards, which were sold at the Conservative Party conference in 1977. The image of Margaret Thatcher differs from the one used in this collection of proof cards.
