Barratt & Co. - (BAR-295-1/2/3 / BAR-70-A/B/C) Famous Footballers

1947-1950
(BAR-295-1/2/3 / BAR-70-A/B/C) Famous Footballers
Barratt & Co.
3 x 50 cards

Three sets of 50 cards, featuring just 79 footballers. These cards are known as the 'Non-Descriptive' series and measure 62mm x 44mm. Some cards have different captions on the front. Where there is a difference it's not known which set any particular caption belongs to. On turning the cards over the backs have to be rotated to be read properly. Some cards need to be rotated clockwise and some anti-clockwise. I've listed all variations I know about, but there may well be others.

  1. Hi Alan

1947-48 Forbes is definitely Sheffield United but 48-49 and 49-50 is Arsenal. I've just tracked down the 48-49 card and it is Arsenal. Also, his last game for the Blades was 17 Jan 1948.

    best

    1. Hi Paul,

Thanks for your help. I've got the two different versions listed in the 'Different Captions' section but didn't really know which was which.

  2. Looking through my Barratt Famous Footballer (Blank backs) I noticed D Jones Bury (captain), Welsh International. This is incorrect, it is Les Jones of Coventry City. I don't know if anyone has noticed this before.

    1. The image they use certainly looks similar to Les Jones, but he'd come to the end of his career by the time the first set of Famous Footballers were issued. I'll need to do more research.

  3. I have found that David Jones did play half back for Bury 1934-1950 he was born Hodthorpe England 1914 and first played for Worksop Town before signing for Bury, I cant find a photo of him and NO David Jones from Bury played for Wales, so maybe its just the caption that's incorrect. I still think that the images look alike Les Jones he is also is in the Topical Times Football 1939 'Great Players'.

    1. I think getting a photo of the Bury player is crucial, though the photo they use does look like a slightly older Les Jones.
