Football Cards
J. Baines
20,000+ cards
J. Baines was not the first to sell football and cricket cards in the North of England in the late 1880's but he was the most prolific and the business survived into the 1920's. I've always been interested in the various issuers and the businesses that took advantage of craze of collecting football and cricket cards. I thought I would delve into my database and shows some of these interesting cards from a bygone age.

Hey again, nice cards!! Thanx for showing these which I guess date to 1896-98 by Fry's photo, he was 25 years old when it was taken. Can we have a Baines page with all the types in date order? Thanks again
ReplyDeleteI am pretty sure neither card is a Baines issue. These both appear to have the W.N.Sharpe address detail on the front.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I couldn't find any address but they do look like W.N. Sharpe cards. I made a decision some time ago to group anything that looks like a Baines, no matter who printed them, to be listed as a Baines card, even if they were printed by Sharpe, Richardson, Petty, Alf Cooke, etc. There are over 180 posts listed as J. Baines in the Index: F-L that can be found in the Blog Index in the right-hand column.
