John Brumfit - The Public Schools' Ties Series (Old Boys)

1925
The Public Schools' Ties Series (Old Boys)
John Brumfit
50 cards

In the years between the first F.A. Cup tournament in 1872-73 season and the foundation of the Football League in 1888 a wide range of teams entered the F.A. Cup. Some of them were clubs formed by former pupils of public schools like Charterhouse, Eton and Harrow. These 'old boys' met with varying success in those early pioneering days. None ever featured on cigarette cards at the time but in 1925 cigarette cards were issued that feature some of the old names and display the club ties. They're not really football cards but might interest some collectors.
• Old Etonians were the most successful. After withdraw from their first competition in 1873-74, they reached the final in 1874-75, losing to the Royal Engineers; failed at the final hurdle the following season, losing to Wanderers, but eventually won the F.A. Cup in 1878-79, defeating Clapham Rovers.
• Old Wykehamists: 1876-77 withdrew; 1877-78 withdrew
• Old Harrovians: 1876-77 lost 1st Round v Royal Engineers; 1877-78 lost Semi-Final v Royal Engineers; 1878-79 lost 3rd Rd v Notts Forests
