(PHQ 448) - First World War - Second Lieutenant Walter Tull
Royal Mail
6 postcards (1 football)

The Royal Mail have been issuing sets of stamps each year between 2014 and 2018 commemorating events that took place during the First World War. They also produce postcards and this one from the 2018 set features footballer Walter Tull. He played for Clapton, Tottenham Hotspur and Northampton Town. He served in the Football Battalions (17th and 23rd) of the Middlesex Regiment. While training in Ayrshire in February 1917 he signed for Glasgow Rangers, intending to play for them once the war had ended. Tull was killed in action near the village of Favreuil but his body was never recovered and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
