Lamar Hunt was probably the most important individual in the development of football (soccer) in the United States. He was the man behind the North American Soccer League in the 1960's and 70's and also founded Major League Soccer. The U.S. Open Cup, the oldest football competition in the United States is named after him. He also founded Columbus Crew and following his death in December 1996 this commemorative coin was created.
