Lesley and Gary Curtis at LDC Auctions have been able to confirm the complete checklist for this collection. It's strange that this set uses most of the R. & J. Hill 'Famous Footballers' cards, but missing cards numbered 10, 20, 30 and 40, 49 and 50 for some reason, and the cards brought in to replace them have the brand name at the top. The numbers in the square brackets ('[ ]') indicate the equivalent card number in the R. & J. Hill set. It's really pleasing to get this checklist completed as it's one I've been working on for almost thirty years!

Alan, as I picked up another Tobler card today I thought I would take another look at the listing. So the 6 players removed all apear to have either retired or been transferred in 1939.Nicholson transferred to Oldham,Guthrie had a car accident and sub retired, Shadwells career finished by WWII, Willshaw transferred to Leyton Orient, Hullett transferred to Manchester United but don’t think he played a game and Nichols the goalie retired in 1939. It does make some sense that Tobler perhaps owned the rights to the 6 new images and hence denoted that with their name on the front. Brgds Ian Penistone
ReplyDeleteI’ve been checking the 6 players missed out by Tobler. Nicholson transferred to Oldham in 1939,Guthrie had a car accident in 1939 and retired,Shadwells career was finished by WWII, Willshaw transferred to Orient in 1939, Hullett transferred to Manchester United in 1939 but don’t think he every played for them and Nichols retired also in 1939. Makes sense that Tobler would their name to the front of the 6 images they probably owned the rights to

DeleteThank you for getting in touch. Your research seems to round things off nicely. I wondered why they replaced those players but didn't really look into it. What you have discovered seems to be the likely explanation.
