Roger Pashby has just added two of these photos to his website - Huddersfield Town Cards & Stickers - and wondered if I had any information on this collection. They are large photographs measuring 210mm x 158mm and similar to press photos. Each usually has a label attached to the back describing the photo shown on the front, though sometimes the label is missing. There are 27 listed here, they are not numbered and are numbered here for reference purposes only. Considered to be issued by Ernest Smith and also S. Detheridge, Birmingham; though collectors always seem to refer to them as Wayfarer Raincoats. The photos cover a range of subjects but I am only listing the known football photos. The photos shown above appear at 13, 19 and 28 in the list.

UPDATE (09-03-2024 15:48):  I have added photos of cards listed at no. 9 and no. 12, I've also pinched Roger Pashby's two cards that feature on his amazing, ever-expanding website (The Huddersfield Town Collection) and I've also found a photo of card number 20. I'll try and turn this post into an illustrated checklist of all the known football cards but they are very rare. Pete (of Pete's Picture Palace) has provided details of two more cards, these have been added to the list at numbers 30 and 31.
UPDATE (14-03-2024 19:00):  Pete (of Pete's Picture Palace) has provided scans of a few more cards, including numbers 30 and 31. He also advised that the photo originally shown at 20 should be moved to 10 and 20 has been replaced by another photo from Pete. His explanation for the alteration is that the photo now moved to 10 is definitely at Craven Cottage. The Bury v Fulham game was an F.A. Cup tie, 3 January, 1939, both sides in change kit, which used to be the rule when there was a clash of colours. Bury are in striped shirts, black shorts, Fulham in presumably, red shirts and white shorts. Fulham won that cup tie 6-0.
UPDATE (14-03-2024 19:39):  Robin Pearson has provided four more photos - no. 6 and three not previously listed, added at 32, 33 and 34.
UPDATE (17-03-2024 09:58):  Pete has provided two more photos. The back are missing the the descriptive label usually found on the reverse. He thinks one might but number 11, so I've added it there, with a question mark against it. If it is "A Goal – Savage (Leeds) & Argue (Chelsea)" where is Jimmy Argue? He scored against Leeds United twice at Stamford Bridge in that period – 16 January, 1937, in an F.A. Cup 3rd round tie (4-0) and 8 September, 1937, in a league game (4-0). Reg Savage definitely played in the league game on 8 September, 1937, but Pete doesn't know if he played in the earlier cup game.
The other one is added at number 35 as "Arsenal v someone in white & black." Pete can’t match this one at all. He thinks it could be against someone like Fulham, Preston, Bolton, Derby etc. playing Arsenal but none on the list match up to this action. The photo at number 19 could be the same game as both kits look right for that game.

UPDATE (19-03-2024 16:04):  The photo added as number 27 a few days ago was incorrectly identified and has now been added as number 36 with a correct description. Thanks again to Pete for his help.

    Surely it's now 29 known? As Roger picked up the Brentford v Huddersfield Town picture recently.

    Brentford v Huddersfield Town - I'm pretty sure it's the FA Cup 3rd Round match on 16th January 1937 at Griffin Park. We played Huddersfield at GP early in the season - for all seasons prior to WW2 - and that pitch doesn't look like an early season pitch! I'm also going for McKenzie (Left) and James (right) as the Brentford players.

  2. Hi Alan, Have four of these photos, of which only two are labelled. One of the unlabelled ones is the 5 Derby players, one of the labelled is the Arsenal v Leeds.
    The other two are problematic, as one is labelled as Bradshaw (Bury) v Fulham, but is definitely not and the other was bought as Bradshaw (Bury) v Fulham, but even with this I have my doubts. I’m wondering about the checklist and how you came about it? How many of these photos are out there? They seem to be very rare.

    1. Hi Baz,

      I'm sorry for the delay in authorizing for comment. I must admit to not knowing much about these. I can't remember where the list comes from, it might be from one of the Cartophilc Society reference books or magazines. I checked my database and the entry has a very low number, which means it was entered not long after I started moving everything from notebooks and catalogues into a Microsoft Access database, which I started in 1992. I'm sorry I'm not much help.

  3. Alan, I've just bought a batch of these. Most are missing the narrative strips to rear. I can identify 8 clearly from your list. I have 3 that I can't match up though it's possible they are listed but the descriptions are a bit vague. Plus I have 2 with full narrative strips that do not appear on your list - #1 is "FOILED! Wilson (Arsenal keeper) gathers ball from Richardson (West Brom centre forward) at Highbury". And #2 is "ALEX JAMES' GOODBYE TO FOOTBALL" - Alex James, the famous Arsenal footballer, says goodbye to his fellow players. He has given up playing for other appointments in the sporting world". So that would make 31 at least now known, plus 3 others that I can't be sure about. I'm happy to scan them to you if you are interested. Best rgds. Peter Hurn (Pete's Picture Palace).

      Thanks for getting in touch. Before replying I wanted to go through all my old files to see if I could add any more photos and I've had some success. I originally compiled the list for my own use, I just wanted to make a note of players or teams. I never imagined that I would eventually be sharing this information with other collectors. If I had realised, I would have made a more exhaustive list. Now, I'm going to try and turn it into an illustrated checklist. I've currently got 8 shown. If you scan the photos you've got I would be happy to add them here.

  4. Hi Alan, I found out that #27 (Bob John & Cliff Bastin, Arsenal) isn't them at all. It is in fact this photo:- "Carried Off - 25th October 1937: British boxer, Jack Bloomfield carrying the injured boxer, Benny Lynch off the Millwall football pitch, during the annual boxers versus jockeys match, which was followed by the 'Donkey Derby' ". (Photo by J. A. Hampton/Topical Press Agency/Getty Images). So I'm not sure how it got into the hands of Wayfarers. And it's the Den, it's a football match, but they aren't footballers though they are famous sportsmen. Bit of a quandary for you. Sorry about that. Pete

      Thanks for letting me know, I'll amend the list and move #27 to #36. It's football - they all count!
