UPDATE (22-07-2019 17:07):  J. Pennington (West Bromwich Albion "now with Notts County") has the results for 1914-15 on the back. 1. Alan reference card no 17 E S Garvie During my research into footballers killed in action i am compiling a list of all who appear on an original cigarette football card and this card seems to be a stand out card as the set was issued supposedly in 1917 but have details of Garvie as follows
12117 L/CPL Edwin Stanley Garvie 5th Battalion Cameroon Highlanders was wounded at the battle of Loos and taken prisoner and died in a POW camp in Cologne on 15/10/15 and is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery it is intriguing to why they produced the card of Garvie since he died two years before the issue of that set whilst all the others in service can be distinguished by the OHMS on the card

    1. Hi Mick,

That's an interesting piece of research. It is strange how they'd include him after all that time. Was it possibly that, although he died in 1915, news of his death didn't reach the UK until some time after he had passed away?

  2. Alan

His death was reported in the Glasgow Herald on 1/11/1915 so certainly his club Queens Park were aware and a tribute and memorial was made in his honour Also a memorial to him can be found in Titwood Parish Church Glasgow I can only assume the set was researched and players selected pre 1915 His younger brother aged 20 was a 2nd LT who served in the 9 Btn Highland Light Infantry and was awarded the Military Cross but died near the end of the war on 15//6/1918

  3. Hi Alan,

You've got the Jesse Pennington (West Brom) cards attributed to the wrong set. He was an Albion player from 1903-1922, which means the 'Now with Notts County' version must be from the 1922 series and the other card from this series.

    Regards,

    Craig

Thanks for letting me know, I've amended both listings.

  4. Hello I'm curious about the Billy Meredith card because it states "now with Manchester City" despite the fact he only went back to City in 1921. Was the card maker psychic or is there a chance some cards are from a later date despite showing 1916-17 results on the back of the card?

    1. That's an interesting point, the cards usually dated to 1917 and showing results from 193-14, 1914-15 or 1916-17 seems to have been issued AFTER the set that shows results from 1921-22. I've added a note to this checklist, updated the year of issue and added the seasons shown on the backs of the cards.
