ReplyDeleteExcuse the pun, but this really gets my GOAT. Topps appears to have erased 103 years—94 seasons—of English top-flight history by recognising records only from the 1992–93 season, when the division was renamed the Premier League.
English top-flight football began in the 1888–89 season, not 1992–93. Formed on 17 April 1888, it is the world’s oldest professional association football league competition and is now 138 years old.
Jimmy Greaves—not Lamine Yamal—was the youngest player to reach 50 goals in Europe’s top five leagues. Even prolific scorers such as Bloomer, Dean and Lawton did not reach the milestone as quickly.
Greaves was 19 years and 29 days old—having been born on 20 February 1940—when he scored twice against PNE on 21 March 1959. His second goal was his 28th top-flight league goal of the 1958–59 season, following 22 in 1957–58.

DeleteI totally agree, Topps and probably UEFA too, are so blinkered. You'd think they only invented the game earlier this century. Although I'm not a Spurs or Chelsea fan Jimmy Greaves is one of my heroes, scoring on his debut for every team he played for including Milan and England. And half the time the pitches more resembled ploughed fields and the only grass on them were four triangles in the four corners of the pitch and much of the rest covered in tons of sand.
